Margarida Gaspar de Matos. The best thing parents have to give their children is to be happy themselves.
The clinical psychologist who has most studied the universe of adolescence in Portugal has just published a book on 'they'. Against this classic division of generations, he advocates an urgent review of the school.
It's always very difficult to talk about all the children and all the parents, but we can talk about some generational differences that were striking between us. We had the generation of the children of the Estado Novo, where everything was frightened, it was the time of ‘seems bad’. The dynamic between parents and children was centered on what looked bad to neighbors. This later, in the following generations, translated into some letting go. And this letting go has had consequences in this generation, which brings us to this tendency to protect the children that actually exists.
Parents think about their youth, the '80s and '90s, and they don't want kids to take the same risks.
That's true, but to think so is a typical generational mistake.
