The National Council of Children and Youth (CNCJ) is an initiative of the National Commission for the Promotion of the Rights and Protection of Children and Youth (CNPDPCJ), aimed at implementing the right to participation, enshrined in Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The National Commission is a reference entity for the effective implementation of the Rights of all children and young people in Portugal, namely in terms of their participation in public decision-making.
The CNCJ aims to give voice to the experiences, concerns, needs and expectations of children and young people. The methodology of the CNCJ has a strong pedagogical character, empowering children and young people for active participation in public decision-making, aiming that its action has an impact on their social transformation.
The main objectives of the CNCJ are:
Promote access for children and young people to new spaces for social and political participation;
Develop in children and young people communication skills, interpersonal relationships and critical reflection;
- Provide dialogue between children and young people and policy makers;
- To train and sensitize the participants on the topics dealt with in the CNPDPCJ, namely the Rights of the Child;
Promote the exchange of experiences between children and young people from different parts of the country.
